Capercaillie The
capercaillie or 'horse of the
woods', is the largest grouse in
the world. However, despite its
size it is a very vulnerable bird,
They need large open areas of
Scots pine wood to survive and
breed and it is this habitat which
is on the decline. The Scottish
Highlands are the last remaining
stronghold of this bird. The
capercaillie has the unfortunate
distinction of being the UK's most
endangered bird and is most likely
to become extinct by 2015. Thirty
years ago there were an estimated
20,000 capercaillie in Scotland,
today their numbers have dwindles
to around 900. These
magnificent birds can be seen at
the RSPB reserve at Abernethy. The
main viewing area can be found at
the Loch Garten Osprey Centre
where the capercaillie can be seen
during their spring lek. You
can join the caperwatch at the
centre between April and mid-May.
